Presents independence of the axiom of choice and the continuum hypothesis, Souslin's hypothesis, and other applications of the method of forcing. Introduces the theory of large cardinals. Prereq., MATH 6730. Undergraduates need instructor consent.

Explores various geographic topics emphasizing the concept of culture. Emergence of several points of view in the development of cultural geography. Restricted to graduate students. May be repeated up to 7 total credit hours.

Addresses the role of communication in cultural change efforts in organizations. Topics include the nature and function of organizational cultures, role of leadership, ethical issues, and member involvement in change processes. Specific organizational cases are highlighted throughout. Prereq., graduate standing or instructor consent. Recommended prereq., COMM 5620.

Focuses on analytical, ideological, cultural, and political tensions between understandings of race and nationalism. Readings are interdisciplinary, but students identify and analyze tensions between race and nationalism at particular historical moments. Prereq., graduate standing or instructor consent.

Covers stabilization policy and structural adjustment. Specific topics include orthodox stabilization policies (fiscal, monetary, and exchange rate policies); heterodox stabilization policies (price, wage, and interest controls); trade liberalization; financial liberalization; privatization and deregulation. Introduces first-year graduate students to the full range of substantive topics, research programs, and other projects in which graduate sociology faculty are engaged. Introduces first-year graduate students to time series approach of model building and forecasting. Basic topics are autoregressive integrated moving average models, nonstationarity and co-integration, vector autoregressions, and the evaluation of forecasts from such models. Emphasizes applied computer assignments. Prereqs., ECON 3818 and 4808, or equivalent.

Introduction to the graduate academic study of religion through the exploration of contemporary models and issues that demonstrate the nature and future of the field. Each student will prepare a profile of his/her intended area of research. Prerequisites: Restricted to Religious Studies (RLST) graduate students only.

Offers guidance and instruction on topics related to advanced graduate study and academic life beyond graduation. Discussions will include writing journal articles; creating a vitae; writing dissertations; applying for grants and other sources of funding; the academic job search; and what to expect as a junior faculty member.
