Focuses on Shakespeare the dramatist through the study of the three Shakespeare plays produced in the summer by the Colorado Shakespeare Festival. In addition to exploring the text, the historical context and performance conventions c. 1600, students meet the CSF teams (professional directors, dramaturgs, designers and actors) of the three plays and the Producing Artistic Director of the CSF. Explores the Jewish-American experience from the 19th century to the present through writers such as Sholom Aleichem, Peretz, Babel, Singer, Malamud, Miller, Ginsberg, and Ozick. Introduces students to Old English, the ancient ancestor of Modern English (as Latin is the ancestor f Spanish and Italian, distinct from both). Course will focus on reading knowledge through grammar study and translation, and to a lesser extent on pronunciation. Provides basic parsing and translation skills and an introduction to the history, culture, and literature of Anglo-Saxon England.
Continues development of skills in Old English reading and translation. Translation and literary study of one longer work and a number of shorter related works. Repeatable course rotates on a three-year basis, for instance, year 1 may focus on Beowulf and shorter heroic elegies; year 2 may involve prose such as legends and saints' lives; year 3 may involve religious poetry.
